On Joey Tre's latest project, 'Cut From The Same Cloth' the Chicago emcee showcases versatility alongside artistic development, producing his most complete project to date.
While prior projects have shown Tre' offer flashes of brilliance, his lack of diversity in subject material ultimately led to disappointing projects. While one could say the same about CFTSC, this project feels entirely different than any of Tre's prior projects.
Without diving too far into things, lets look at the good, the bad, and the great of what this album offers.
Good- CFTSC completes the task of providing a solid album without creating listeners fatigue. The album is 17-tracks long, that's pretty much unheard of in today's hip-hop. However Tre' makes this work, creating an album that flows flawlessly without forcing listeners to decide when enough is enough.
Also Good- Lyrically, this is as mature Tre' has ever sounded on an album. Over the years, Tre' has developed multiple rapping styles and throughout this album, every style shines. While there are times where Tre' forces words into his verse, that's simply a growing pain within his development. Ultimately, this album showcases Tre' as a lyrical mastermind.
Bad- One issue is song placement throughout the album. Having songs such as "fantASStic" placed between heavier subject mattered tracks, "You Know I Got You" and "Criminology" takes listeners away from the intended messages.
Also Bad- The album is too long. While I'll excuse listening to an album with 17-tracks, I simply can't ignore this as an issue. While some tracks sound far more dated than others,
Great- Tre's beat selection. While Tre' has struggled within this department in the past, CFTSC offers a step in the right direction, producing crisp and sonically pleasing tones allowing for Tre's wicked lyricism to shine through.
This album is a leap in the right direction. Allowing Tre' to showcase his versatility throughout each track. Whether its signing, guest features and his ability to change his style around his selected producer, Tre' succeeds. One can only wonder how long it'll take before his talents reach mass success.
