Over the past few days, I had the pleasure of being able to cover Detroit's House of Vans, a four-day event dedicated to the era of grunge skating. Hosted at the Jefferson School in Midtown Detroit, this event combined Skateboarding, art, music, and shopping.

Featuring local community brands, Ghostly International and Third Man Records, this event also provided by local restaurants such as Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken.  This pop-up shop welcomed guest of all ages, ultimately highlighting Detroit culture.

This statement was evident through each display. Detroit culture was evident through each art display, through every workshop, and musical artist, headlined by Detroit's own Danny Brown.

While I was able to stop by the Jefferson school to see what the event had to offer, the biggest takeaway I could offer was that Detroit's art scene was brighter than ever.

Below are a few photos I was able to take along with some photos that were taken by photographer, Laura Kirsch.

Here's a recap of my visit.

(Sidenote, am I a photojournalist now?)

The atmosphere was electric throughout each night as each room presented a different mood. And oftentimes you could find strangers bonding with one another over the art, over the music or simply over a drink. I was fortunate enough to meet a few of these strangers for a moment or two throughout each night.

A lovely couple who I captured before a kiss. (Sorry you two)

 A beautiful photo display

 Off guards are always cool

Sometimes rooms would be filled with art like this.

Ultimately I had to take a cool photo or two of myself.

 Overall a great event. 10/10
